A YouTube Ad Blocker That Actually Works

Lunar Browser blocks YouTube ads at the network layer — not in an extension. That’s why it still works after the counter-measures that broke uBlock Origin and every other extension-based ad blocker.

The Problem

Why your YouTube ad blocker keeps breaking

For years YouTube tolerated ad-blocking extensions. That changed in 2024. YouTube began detecting blockers, showing nag screens (“Ad blockers violate YouTube’s terms”), then degrading playback for users running uBlock Origin, AdBlock Plus, and AdGuard. Every few weeks YouTube ships a new detection round; every few weeks the blockers ship a workaround; a few weeks later it breaks again.

The problem is structural. An extension runs in the same JavaScript world as YouTube’s page. YouTube can always see what the extension is doing, because they share a DOM. It’s a cat-and-mouse game the cats are winning.

The Lunar Approach

Block at the network, not the page

Lunar Browser ships with a built-in transparent proxy (MITM). Every request your browser makes — including every advert YouTube tries to load — passes through Lunar’s network layer before reaching the page. Ads are filtered out before YouTube’s JavaScript ever sees them.

From YouTube’s point of view, the ad request simply never returns. There is no extension to detect, no DOM change to inspect, no JavaScript object to fingerprint. The blocker isn’t in the page at all — it sits one layer further down the stack.

This is the same architecture used by privacy proxies and enterprise filters — we just made it work for ordinary users, baked into the browser, with zero setup.

What You Get

Ad-free YouTube, every time

  • No pre-roll ads before videos
  • No mid-roll ads in the middle of long videos
  • No banner ads on the homepage or sidebar
  • No “ad blocker detected” nag screens
  • Faster video starts — no ad fetch, no buffering
  • No YouTube Premium subscription required
  • Works on Windows and Android
Bonus

Background play on Android

On Android, Lunar is the last major browser that still lets YouTube keep playing when the screen is off. (YouTube closed that feature off in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge during 2026.)

Combined with no ads, this turns any Android phone into a free Spotify Premium alternative for use with a Bluetooth speaker — and saves significant battery because the screen stays dark. Read more about background play →
